Ecoturismo

Cuzamá

This small town, located almost 40 km to the northeast of the city of Merida, offers an ecotourism trail called the “Cenote Route”, where adventure, ecotourism and rural life meet in perfect harmony. The route starts out by truck, antique carts which once transported bails of shredded henequen from ancient haciendas to the places where this valuable product was commercialized. Today’s community has discovered that the humble truck is an excellent utility, converting it into an original means of horse-drawn transportation which takes tourists along the 7 kms of railroad tracks to enjoy unique rural landscapes, native flora and fauna and a profusion of bird varieties which live in the surrounding tropical deciduous forest.

Emotion mounts on arriving at the first of three cenotes, specially conditioned so that all visitors can appreciate their beauty to the full. The CHELENTUN, CHANCZINICHEN and BOLONCHOOJOL cenotes are natural rock formations which unveil a mysterious subterranean world bathed in crystalline waters which are ideal for snorkeling, cave diving or simply taking a refreshing dip.

Each of the cenotes has areas and basic services to satisfy the needs of visitors: changing area, ecological bathrooms, shady palapas for resting and, above all, a one-of-a-kind experience.

The trip is per truck, which carries up to 4 passengers.

It is advisable to take light refreshments, purified water, tennis or walking shoes, bug repellent, bathing suit, binoculars and notebook. Contact any of the gentlemen at the departure point in the Chunkanan community for the trip.
