Ecoturismo

Tekal de Venegas

The town is located 73 km from the city of Mérida to the north of Izamal. An eco-archeological trail is found there, by the name of Oxwatz which begins with a visit to two of the eight ex-haciendas on the outskirts of town. These henequen estates reached their peak in the 18th century when the production of green gold was at its height. A highly recommended visit is that to two temples of somber architecture which date back to colonial times; one in honor of San Ramon, the other of San Pedro. A brief stop is made in Chac May, an ex-hacienda in the midst of a community of little over 380 inhabitants, where only the chimney of the shredding plant still stands. To continue the trip you have to delve 11 kms into the jungle along a rural path, while the guide relates tales of how the townspeople waited for the train to send their bails of henequen from Chac May to Tekal de Venegas. Most interesting is the arrival at Oxwatz, meaning “three turns”, an antique ranch which was abandoned when the cropland ran out.

Along the way you’re sure to see a great variety of native trees and vegetation which the ancient Maya used for their healing and gastronomic properties. Another multicolored attraction is the wealth of migratory and resident bird species; woodpeckers, blue jays, rose-throated and grey-collared becards, mockingbirds, vireos and falcons among many other species of mammals and reptiles that make their home in the conditions and ecosystems of Oxwatz. Also recommended are the cooling pools in the middle of the jungle. These trips can be made by trekking or biking. You can take a well-earned rest at the Kukula cenote, an “oasis in the desert”, and a superb spot for snorkeling and diving. Next stop is an archeological zone, not yet restored but believed to be of great importance, by the name of Ixbaatún.

At night, camp is made in one of the specially conditioned areas before setting off on a guided safari along the paths to listen to the characteristic sounds of the jungle night. Supper around the bonfire is accompanied by legends of ancient settlers.

It is advisable to take light refreshments, purified water, tennis or walking shoes, bug repellent, bathing suit, binoculars, notebook and tent (optional). Information about the Oxwatz eco-archeological trail can be obtained at www.oxwatz.com.
